Communities help shape Heathhall Forest’s future

Heathhall Forest is to remain an attractive and healthy place for the community, whilst continuing to provide a sustainable source of timber and a home for wildlife.

 

That’s the vision that is being put forward by Forestry Commission Scotland after several months of consultation with visitors and people living in the area.

 

A new Forest Design Plan has now been created for Heathhall which will be on public display at Lochthorn Library from Friday 7th to Friday 14th December.

 

Alan Gale, Planning Forester with Forestry Commission Scotland explained:

 

“The plan will guide future management to ensure that the forest remains an attractive place of peace, quiet and tranquillity, whilst providing a sustainable source of timber and a healthy home for wildlife.

 

“It is important that the forest is easily accessible for people to enjoy, and a mixture of coniferous and broadleaved trees will create an intimate natural woodland setting.”

 

The consultation process over Heathhall took several months and includes feedback from the local community and forest user groups. All highlighted the value of the forest for recreation, health and education.

 

Forestry Commission Scotland has supported a number of activities to enhance this potential.

 

Lesley Smith, Communities Officer for the Commission added:

 

“Our staff have been busy improving access to the forest and working with the public to encourage more people to visit this beautiful place.

 

“As well as improvements to the cycling loop, and refurbishment of the parking area off Lockerbie Road, we have added a new link path to create a circular walk.

“Our rangers have also led public events and worked with local schools to raise awareness of the forest as an inspirational place for play and learning.”

 

The public are invited to view the plan which will be on display at Lochthorn Library from Friday 7th to Friday 14th December. For anyone wanting to find out more, Forestry Commission Scotland staff will be present at the library on Wednesday 12th December between 4.00 and 7.00pm.
