Second Phase Of £40M M74 Upgrade Gets Underway: McAlpine Pleased

South of Scotland MSP Joan McAlpine has welcomed news that the second phase of the M74 upgrade gets underway on the 23rd of February.
The £40m programme of works is set to improve the condition of the road, which is over 20 years old in places, and extend its long term life.
The road upgrade will take place between Gretna (Junction 22) and Millbank (Junction 12).
Commenting after the announcement, Ms McAlpine said,
“With over 30,000 vehicles using the motorway each day, it is imperative that the road must be in good condition.
“This busy motorway is the main route between the Border and the Central belt and hasn’t had major repairs since 1997 so I am very pleased that the Scottish Government is focused on improving our transport links.”
“I urge drivers who use this road to plan their journeys in advance using the Traffic Scotland website and to listen to local radio bulletins to avoid any potential delays.”
Traffic will be limited to 40mph through the works in the interests of safety for the workforce and motorists. Motorists should allow extra time for their journeys or consider using an alternative route while the works are carried out.
