Stranraer Harbour: West Wall Works

A section of the west wall at Stranraer Harbour is in a dangerous condition and emergency works are in progress to prevent an unplanned collapse of the wall.
There has been movement of this section of wall for a number of years, however, there was a sudden increase in the movement on 1 March when cracks appeared in the surface of the quayside.
Following advice from a contractor’s marine specialist, it was planned to install a rock berm at the base of the wall to limit further movement as a short term measure pending a permanent solution.
Evidence of continuing movement accelerated the procurement process and local contractor Luce Bay started construction of the berm today. Work will continue over the weekend. The area at risk has been cordoned off and vehicle access along the west wall will be controlled to suit the operations.
A notice to mariners has been issued advising that the inner harbour has been closed.
