“Stuff” into Art, New Exhibition at Gracefield Gallery

A new exhibition by Scottish artist Charmian Pollok opens at the end of August at Gracefield Gallery 2.
All Charmian Pollok’s work derives from the experience of a place, some moments in time, as the artist walks a particular landscape.
Ms Pollok says that attending art school at Glasgow School of Art in her middle age taught me to call the ‘stuff’ she collected ‘found objects’.
“As a child I would walk and botanise and collect ‘stuff’ which I found along the way. Decades later things have not changed much, except that now this activity has a purpose which is directed towards my artworks,” Ms Pollok said.
Alongside found objects her work also often employs handmade papers, often made from plants gathered from the site where the object was found, thus increasing the site-specificity of the piece.
Living in the Scottish countryside, in the Trossachs, Pollok’s walks often take her across country and past ruined crofts hence this on-going project.
Charmian will be in the Gallery in Dumfries from 2 – 4pm on Saturday 31 August to chat about her works and will also be undertaking a hands-on workshop on Saturday 7th September.
Participants of all ages are invited to try making some paper art of their own in a family workshop from 1-4pm. Places cost £4.40 and can be booked on 01387 262084.
Running concurrently with Charmian’s new exhibition is the 86th annual exhibition of the Dumfries & Galloway Fine Arts Society. This is an opportunity to view over 250 artworks buy local artists and perhaps purchase a work for your own collection.
Also at Gracefield: the new Saturday Kids Club season (age 50-12) and Baby and Toddler sessions kicks off on the morning of 7th September with our usual exciting programme of art and craft activities to keep create hands busy.
Admission to the exhibitions is free, and we are open Tuesday – Saturday 10am-5pm,
