Fire at Annan Farm – August 20th

Written by on August 21, 2013

Firefighters from across Dumfries and Galloway responded to a fire within a silo at a farm in Annan Tuesday evening (August 20).

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) staff at Operations Control in Dumfries received reports of smoke coming from an industrial dryer within a farm building at around 6:30pm.

Crews worked throughout the night to tackle the fire and ensure the safety of the scene, with five appliances mobilised from Annan, Dumfries and Lockerbie.

Firefighters in breathing apparatus were able to extinguish the flames, which had broken out within a dryer containing around 16 tonnes of grain, using a single hosereel water jet.

Work continued throughout the morning to dampen down hot-spots within the silo and ensure the fire had been completely extinguished.

Safe working at height procedures were implemented and firefighters cut-away pieces of the industrial unit to gain full access to the silo and douse the grain stored inside.

No one was hurt in the incident, which is not being treated as suspicious, but both the dryer and its contents sustained significant damage due to heat and flames.
