Herbert von Karajan, who died in 1989, was an Austrian orchestra and opera conductor. and principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra for 35 years. He is regarded as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century.
He was also the top-selling classical music-recording artist of all time, having sold an estimated 200 million records, mostly due to the phenomenal number of albums he recorded.
This Sunday on Classics at Noon Hugh Taylor will be looking at his life, examine the controversy of his Nazi Party membership and playing some of the many recordings he made with The Berlin Philharmonic
