QUEENS O St MIRREN 2
First-half goals from Sean Kelly and Steven Thompson gave St Mirren their first win of the Championship season as they beat Queen of the South.
Kelly was quickest to react after Thompson headed Stephen Mallan’s corner into the six-yard box.
Thompson squandered a fine chance before doubling Ian Murray’s side’s lead after out-muscling his marker.
Andrew Dowie headed past a post and Thomson saved well to deny Calum Gallagher in the second half.
Owen Moxon came close to grabbing a late consolation goal for the Doonhamers in stoppage time, but the Saints preserved their clean sheet.
Queen of the South remain third, despite their second successive home defeat in the Championship.
After last week’s drubbing by Rangers, the Doonhamers lost 2-0 to St Mirren – both goals coming in the first half.
Boss James Fowler said: “I think we have just got to make sure we work hard, first and foremost, and win our individual battles which I didn’t feel we did in the first half.
“That obviously builds momentum for St Mirren and it puts us on the back foot.”
