One man’s dying wish – to get into the charts
Written by author on October 28, 2015
Sean Whittaker was 51 when he was diagnosed with cancer of the mouth and after a year and a half of disfiguring surgery and treatment, he was sent home. There was nothing to be done, apart from control the pain and wait.
But Sean wasn’t going to go quietly, he wanted to achieve his life long ambition of getting a single into the UK charts – with all proceeds going to the Macmillan Nurses.
He got his friends together from his first band, from his school days at Sedbergh.
On the Saturday they met up at his home in Auchencairn, Scotland and sketched out a song ready for the studio recording the next day. That evening they chatted and laughed round the fire reminiscing about the old days. Friends reunited after 36 years.
The following morning Sean wasn’t feeling too well. His friends went to the studio and Sean was to follow on later.
It was at the studio that the call came through, that Sean’s vision was too blurred to drive, but go ahead with the recording, he would finish it later.
By that evening Sean had gone blind, but he listened to the recording more than a dozen times, and absolutely loved it: “that’s exactly what I wanted it to be. You must be proud of yourselves!”
It was the last song he heard. The following morning his condition had deteriorated and he was rushed to hospital where he was put into a medically induced coma and died 2 days later.
