Big Burns Supper takes the cake

The Big Burns Supper festival in Dumfries celebrated its fifth birthday last night with a Burns Night bash and the cutting of a haggis cake.
Hundreds of volunteers, plus staff and members of the public gathered at the Spiegeltent main venue to mark the occasion.
Graham Main, the festival’s artistic director, said: “This festival is one of Scotland’s fastest growing, most successful and colourful events and it’s not us who have done that – it’s the people of Dumfries and all the artists who work so hard to make it a success.
“In the first four years we entertained more than 80,000 people, and that’s before we start adding in the numbers for this year, so it’s something quite amazing that’s happening here each year.
“We are celebrating Burns and his legacy in way that I think he would have appreciated, with lots of fun that brings the whole community together.”
The birthday cake was created specially by Janet Bell, a dinner lady at Wallace Hall School, Thornhill, who bakes for fun. She said: “I love doodling and making cakes. I wanted to create something that was everybody’s idea of a haggis – a wee furry creature with legs which runs around on the hills dressed in tartan.”
The results were spectacular and the cake was piped into the Spiegeltent and ceremonially cut in a novel take on the Burns Supper tradition.
It was then divided up and shared by hundreds of adults and children.
