Second hill walker dies in Hospital

Police Scotland said this morning that a second man from the group of three missing walkers in the Durisdeer area has died in Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.

He was pronounced dead late last night at the end of a day which had saw one of his companions die after they were airlifted from hills north of Durisdeer in North Dumfriesshire.

George Crosbie, aged 73, of Averill Crescent, Dumfries was pronounced dead shortly after being flown to hospital in Dumfries.

Then last night Geoffrey Stewart, 74, of Rotchell Park, Dumfries, also died.

The third man 64-year-old Bobby Thomson, also of Dumfries is recovering in Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.

All three spent 24 hours in the freezing conditions on the hills after setting out on Tuesday morning for a hill walk. Later in the day torrential rain and gales swept the area and all three were suffering from exposure and hypothermia when they were found around 1pm on Wednesday.

Police said today that the Procurator Fiscal has been informed.
