SCHOOL THREATS SPREAD NORTH WITH DUMFRIES HIGH SCHOOL AFFECTED

POLICE throughout Scotland and England are mounting a full scale investigation after the latest threat to schools which included on in Dumfries.
Police Scotland said that a number of schools in the central belt and one in Dumfries and Galloway received threats by telephone this morning.
Dumfries High School was one of these schools and the robust procedures to deal with incidents such as this was put in place to assess the risk.
Police Scotland was informed immediately and attended the school and a spokesman said: “Police Scotland and Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Education Service have been aware of such threats as an emerging issue across the UK in recent weeks.
“There is nothing to indicate that this was a substantive threat and it was, therefore, important not to unnecessarily disrupt pupils’ learning and teaching.
“Obviously, this matter will involve a significant investigation by Police Scotland.”
Later Assistant Chief Constable Steve Johnson said: “A number of schools across the central belt have received a threat via the telephone. Police Scotland would like to reassure the public that at present these do not appear to be credible threats, however they are being taken seriously.
“Staff and police are working with local authorities and are currently searching school buildings. Some schools as a precautionary measure, have been evacuated. Signficant enquiries are underway.”
He added that Parents/guardians of those schools affected will be contacted by their local authority and at Dumfries a statement for parents and carers has been issued by Dumfries High School.
