Cricket: Dumfries undone at Uddingston

Written by on April 20, 2011

It was a contrasting tale of the top fours when APD Dumfries travelled to play Premier League side Uddingston in a friendly fixture.  The top four of Uddingston scored a hundred and eighty between them.  The Dumfries top order had a difficult day and the bright note for the Nunholm side was the four wickets taken by fifteen year old Niall Alexander.

Uddingston chose to bat first and it was a trio of débutantes that made life awkward for the Dumfries bowlers. Watson was the first wicket to fall for 24, dismissed by Niall Alexander in his second over.  Kamran and the Aussie amateur Day took the score past the hundred when Kamran was bowled for 56, again by Alexander.  Day and Gul then pressed on to maintain a healthy run rate and the opposition had neared a hundred and eighty by the thirtieth over.

With ten overs to go and wickets in hand Dumfries then did well to restrict the scoring, principally by taking wickets. On 180 two wickets were taken by McCutcheon. He bowled Day for 54 and then had Bill lbw for a duck. Davidson ran out Gul for 45 and Robert McBride and Alexander came back to take two wickets each for the total to end on a challenging 231 for 9.

The Dumfries reply was effectively settled in the first six overs. The Uddingston openers, Bawa and McKenzie, made better of the seaming conditions and each took two wickets and four of a strong top five were gone with the score on 14. Scott Beveridge set out to restore some pride and he was well supported by young Owen Thompson.  They stayed together until the twentieth over when Thompson was out caught as was Beveridge when he reached 19.

The proceedings were then brightened by a six over long on by Raman and three sixes from Robert McBride as they added nearly fifty. Raman was out caught to Gul for an enterprising 28 and McBride was bowled for 35. Then the innings tailed off for an all out total of just 114 and the prospect of some more training required.

Niall Alexander was the team’s Man of the Match and he along with Dumfries CC’s Chris McBride have been selected for the West Development team at Clydesdale this weekend.
