Thought For The Day – 20th June 2012

Written by on June 20, 2012

A popular Christian hymn today is ‘Lord make me an instrument of your peace.’ As individuals, faithful or not, the lyrics of this hymn can teach us a lot in our day to day lives. For those of you who may not have heard it the hymn goes like this:

Lord make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is discord, unity;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is error, truth;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is sadness, joy;
Where there is darkness, light.

In the world today we need only switch on the news to see what is happening, and all too often today this is dominated by stories looking at poverty, war and the economy – many of which are closely related. In our lives we look on and see this all too often, we have much and, as a result it can at times be difficult to relate to the scenarios and societies featured on the news today, but we are not helpless. As the hymn shows us, we can do our bit – maybe it’s something small, maybe you’ve held a grudge against a friend and could make up, maybe you’ve made a mistake and you could admit to it, and make amends, or maybe you can be the person who says hello to that individual who’s always on their own and bring light to them.

Often it is the simplest of things which can make the greatest difference in people’s lives, what is something very small for you can be the biggest of things for others, maybe you could stop and pray for peace, or an end to world poverty, or maybe if praying isn’t your thing, you could do something simple and easy to brighten up someone else’s day. It is often the simplest of things which can make the biggest of differences.
