Work starts on the new 3G pitch

The first patches of grass were being lifted at Dumfries High School yesterday.  This marks the start of the works on the new 3G pitch for Nithsdale.

Council leader, Ivor Hyslop, took the spade to the old turf on the pitch during a sod cutting ceremony. He was joined by fellow ward Councillor Ted Thompson and area chair Gill Dykes along with representatives from SFA, sportscotland and SRU as well as local club representatives who will be using the new facility including Graham Irvine from Greystone Rovers and Patrick Coupar from Dumfries Saints.

Dumfries and Galloway Council were awarded a grant from the Cashback for Football programme from sportscotland for the provision of three 3G pitches within the region. Now that planning permission has been approved for the site at Dumfries High School, work can now start to take the new Nithsdale 3G pitch forward.

Council Leader, Ivor Hyslop, said “One of our Council’s priorities is ‘to support communities to make best use of their popular parks’. Sport has the power to transform young people’s lives. The investment in this new 3G pitch will provide our local communities with access to the best pitch facility to enable players young and old to practice a range of sports. It will also provide greatly improved opportunities for young people to participate in sport. This sod cutting is a significant step forward. There is a lot of enthusiasm for the new 3G pitch in Nithsdale so I am encouraged that today marks the start of works on the site.”
