Freedom of Dumfries and Galloway Ceremony

Dumfries and Galloway Council will grant Honorary Freeman status to David Stevenson on 11 October 2012 at 7pm in Langholm Parish Church.

The public are invited to attend the event with doors to the Church opening at 6.30pm. Langholm Town Band will be playing a selection of tunes in the Church prior to the ceremony starting and all guests should take their seats by 6.55pm.

David Stevenson has been instrumental in many projects in the Langholm area. He was one of the founders of Edinburgh Woollen Mill and has been the driving force behind a range of projects and charities, including:

* Langholm Initiative

* The Buccleuch Centre

* Access for All paths as part of Langholm Walks

* Young Riders Group

* Supporting young horse trainers in the Langholm Area

* Setting up the Sports Centre, through Edinburgh Woollen Mill

* Christmas lights for Langholm

David Stevenson is Deputy Lord Lieutenant for Dumfriesshire.

Langholm, Ewes and Westerkirk Community Council requested that the Freedom of Dumfries and Galloway be granted to David Stevenson for his involvement in bringing national recognition to the town, his generosity of spirit, and the time he has devoted to his local community.

David Stevenson represented Great Britain in the Olympics in 1964 and Scotland in the Commonwealth Games in 1962 and 1966, competing in pole vaulting.

In 2011, Dumfries and Galloway Council agreed its criteria for granting the Freedom of Dumfries and Galloway:

* Long established relationship with the Council area or through embodiment of the Council’s values;

* Significant business or community contribution which has benefited all or part of the region;

* National or international profile or contribution;

* Personal qualities and attributes (for example, selflessness, overcoming disadvantages or personal challenges, leadership) suitable to be an ambassador for the area.
