WEATHER forecasters are keeping a close watch on the Storm Abigail which is tracking towards Scotland.

Although the Abigail is expected to bring storm force winds of 80 – 90mph in the North and West of Scotland, gales will also hit the South of Scotland.

Abigail is the first storm to be officially named by the Met Office and has now been upgraded from yellow to amber.

The South of Scotland is now covered by a yellow be aware warning with winds of up to 70mph expected in many coastal and hilly areas of Dumfries and Galloway.

The storm is expected to arrive tomorrow afternoon and last overnight into Friday with squally showers and the risk of thunder.

The Met Office says that gusts of up to 90mph could hit exposed areas in the North of Scotland and Northern Isles on Friday morning and there is a danger of disruption to transport.

Weather experts are keeping a close watch on the path of the storm which they say could change and there is still some uncertainty about the exact extent and timing of the strongest winds.
