Written by on September 4, 2013

Gymnastics_active_gamesChildren from across Dumfries and Galloway will converge on Dumfries on Saturday, 7 September, for the Active Games Finals. 510 children, in 16 teams representing countries in the Commonwealth Games, will compete in 8 sports across 3 of the town’s sporting venues.

The event is now one of our Council’s main Games Legacy initiatives and is part of the Games for Scotland programme with funding provided by EventScotland. The programme forms a key part of the Scottish Government’s commitment to deliver a lasting legacy as a result of the Commonwealth Games coming to Scotland and is designed to inspire, motivate, engage and engender pride in the people of Scotland in the run-up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Also sponsored by Gates Power Transmission Limited, DNG Media and the David Stevenson Trust, the event will see the return of the Glasgow 2014 Mascot, Clyde. This year Clydewill be joined by ToBi, the Tour of Britain Mascot, and will lead the teams out in the opening ceremony as the build up to the Commonwealth Games begins.

Dumfries and Galloway Council Leader, Ivor Hyslop, said, “The main aim of the Active Games is to realise a meaningful sporting legacy from the Commonwealth Games coming to Glasgow in 2014. As part of the event we will be welcoming a number of sporting ambassadors who are competing or have competed at the top of their sport which can only inspire the children to do well and continue to take part in sport and lead a healthy lifestyle.”

Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer at EventScotland, said, “We are delighted to be working with the Active Games in the delivery of what promises to be a fantastic event. The Active Games, with a unique opening ceremony, epitomises what the Games for Scotland programme has been designed to accomplish. With one year to go, the diverse programme of sport and dance events as part of the Games for Scotland project is undoubtedly extending the legacy of the Games far beyond the host city to the benefit of communities throughout Scotland.”

David Grevemberg, Glasgow 2014 Chief Executive said, “With the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games fast approaching, the eyes of the world are on Glasgow and Scotland as anticipation builds for what promises to be a truly outstanding sporting and cultural event. We’re delighted that Dumfries and Galloway Council is holding the Active Games as part of the Games for Scotland programme. It gives people across the country a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take part in events celebrating Scotland’s role as host of the Games, as well as its heritage and cultural connection with the Commonwealth community.”
