Castle Douglas Art Gallery – Philipa Sinclair watercolours 3rd to 12th March

Castle Douglas Art Gallery begins its 2011 programme of art and craft exhibitions on with an exhibition of paintings by Philippa Sinclair of Rockcliffe, following her highly successful show there towards the end of last year.
Entitled “Watercolour Spring Show”, Philippa comments about her exhibition as follows:
“My Spring show coincides with a groundbreaking exhibition at Tate Britain titled ‘Watercolour’. Groundbreaking as it aims to relegate to history the misapprehension that watercolour paintings are pallid, dull and perceived with disdain as the poorer relation to oils. The Tate Britain exhibition reveals the uniqueness of this medium and its vital contribution to the history of art and artist. Only in watercolour could Turner have produced such luminous ethereal images of Venice.
“So in my show I am exhibiting my particular style of watercolour painting which is characterised by a bold palette and vigorous brush strokes. Gone are pale insipid washes and in comes vibrant use of colour and wash. I hope to show that watercolour is a medium that can convey luminosity and gravitas. My inspirations include local seascapes and landscapes and still life.”
The exhibition opens on Thursday, March 3rd and runs until Saturday March 12th. The Art Gallery is located adjacent to Castle Douglas Library. Core opening times are from 11am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday and admission is free.
