The New Year at Gracefield begins with an exciting programme of contemporary photography exhibitions across Gracefield Galleries 1 and 2.
We are delighted to be able to show works on loan specially from the National Galleries of Scotland alongside works from our own Permanent Art Collection; a wide selection of new work from Dumfries Camera Club; the Jill Todd Photographic Award and a special local photographers exhibition with imagery of Burma in the Café Gallery.
At a time when taking pictures has never been more popular, these exhibitions aim to show how everyone from the keen amateur to the artist photographer, can bring something original to the art of photography.
11 Jan – 8 March Gallery 2: National Galleries of Scotland/Gracefield Collections
The images on display in Gallery 2 are by established photographers produced during the last 35 years, and have been accessioned into the Scottish National Photography Collection since 1980. Photographers include Fay Godwin, Thomas Joshua Cooper, Wendy McMurdo and Murray Johnston. Also on display by Scottish photographer Alicia Bruce is a photograph from ‘Menie: A portrait of a North East community in conflict’, a project she completed in 2010 documenting the local response to the development of the Trump International Golf Links on the Aberdeenshire coast. Gracefield has a strong collection of photographs and works using photographic techniques, such as the works here by Philip Braham, Norman McBeath and Raymond Moore which explore various themes and imagery.
18 January – 12 February Gallery 1: Dumfries Camera Club Annual Exhibition
This year’s Dumfries Camera Club exhibition offers the chance to see the work of professional and non-professional photographers from one of Scotland’s busiest and best photography Clubs. The Annual Exhibition offers its members the opportunity to produce a themed panel of prints on a subject of their choice. With a membership now approaching sixty in number, many of whom are relatively inexperienced photographers and have joined in the last couple of years, this offers some their first chance to exhibit work in public.
14 February – 8 March Gallery 1: The Jill Todd Photographic Award Exhibition 2014
The Jill Todd Photographic Award has been established to support and celebrate the work of talented photographers from major Photography and Arts Degree programmes in Scotland. The award is open to final year undergraduate students; post graduate students; Master of Arts students and photographers within three years of graduation. All applicants must be from Photography or Art Degree Courses based in Scotland. For this, the second year of The Jill Todd Award, the selected theme is ‘Home’. Work by James Dixon, winner of the Jill Todd Photographic Award 2013, and finalists;
Felix Davey, Edinburgh Napier University and Theresa Moerman, Glasgow School of Art.
14 January – Saturday 8 March: Café Exhibition
The ‘Golden Land’ of Burma – A selection of the stunning images captured by 8 photographers on a rare visit to Burma in December 2012.
Exhibition Talk with Robin Gillanders – Saturday 15 February, 2pm: Gallery 2

Join us for a special exhibition talk by photographer, lecturer, and Jill Todd Photography Award judge, Robin Gillanders, including an exploration of photography as a window on the world and a review of the images from social documentary to landscape.
Photography Weekend – Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 February, 10am – 4pm
Working with professional photographer, Natalie Feather, learn and develop skills in the darkroom and in digital photography. The first day will include analogue photography using large format and a variety of cameras, working in a darkroom learning about the basics of a photograph such as aperture, depth of field, focal length, and image composition. During the second day participants will experiment with digital photography, produce prints and share their work.
Cost £90/£70 (conc) including materials. (Places are limited to 10 and must be booked in advance by contacting Gracefield Arts Centre on 01387 262084).
