COW SETS NEW GALLOWAY FEMALE RECORD AT 8,500GNS

A NEW female record price for a Galloway was set when Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited held the dispersal of the Penninghame herd of Galloway cattle on Saturday.
Along with Messrs AK McConchie & Co’s Galloways from Mains of Penninghame, Newton Stewart the commercial herd of Salers cross sucklers also came under the hammer with no fewer than 451 herd of stock passing through the ring, making it one of the biggest sales of its type to be held in Castle Douglas in recent times.
Active buyers were present from all over the UK resulting in a fantastic trade throughout.
The Penninghame Galloway herd was especially sought after with some of the finest bloodlines in the UK being held in this herd.
The current Galloway female record price was blown away when Lot No 12, Penninghame Susan, with a heifer calf at foot, was sold for 8500gns.
The five-year-old cow was knocked down in a joint deal to Messrs J & A Finlay, Blackcraig, Corsock, and Robert Marshall, Glenrinnies, Dufftown.
Next up at 3800gns was Penninghame Rhapsody with her bull calf at foot selling to Messrs Messrs R A McClymont and Son of Kirkstead, Yarrow, Selkirk. Also at 3800gns was the five year old stock bull Kirkmabreck Upstart which sold to Jim Robertson, Becks, Langholm.
Bulling heifers sold to 3400gns for Penninghame Vera which to Jim and Selena Ross, Romesbeoch, Shawhead.
Andrew McConchie was delighted with the trade and said: “It’s with regret that the herd has come to the market due to retirement but it’s nice to go out with a record and some very good prices.”
The buoyant trade continued through the commercial cattle as well. Topping the sucklers at £2900 was a 4 year old Salers cross cow with her spring born heifer calf at foot which sold to Mr Cunningham, Islay – Autumn Calving Salers Cows with calves topped at £1800 for a five-year-old cow with a heifer calf. In-Calf heifers sold to £1950 whilst bullers topped at £1380.
Stock Bulls were also keenly bid for selling to £4000 for Whitebog Ensign which sold to Mr J Martin,
