THE River Nith is expected to flood parts of the Whitesands later this morning and early afternoon after a night of torrential rain.

The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency said this morning that they are monitoing the situation and more heavy reain which is forecast could cause  more extensive flooding later in the day and overnight.

SEPA said: “High river levels are likely to inundate parts of the Whitesands car park this morning (Sunday) with peak levels at around noon.

“Levels will stay high during the high tide due around 1:30pm to 2pm . There is more heavy rain due across the region later in the afternoon and evening.

“This will likely cause more extensive flooding of the Whitesands and Mill Green, and possibly to other adjacent areas but it’s not clear yet to what extent.”

Elsewhere Rivers across Dumfries and Galloway are at flood levels and have already burst their banks flooding farmland.

Roads have also been badly affected with a number of minor roads under water and Police Scotland has issued a warning about driving with extreme care throughout the day.
