LEARN TO PLAY HAILED A SUCCESS

Ice Hockey UK’s Learn to Play (LTP) program is already being hailed as a great success following a session at Dumfries Ice Rink.
The initiative, which was unveiled in Dumfries at the Under-18 World Championship in March, stems from a development plan between IHUK and the sport’s governing body, the IIHF.
Clubs had to apply to IHUK to take part and there is a strict criteria to follow, which the clubs now have to adhere to throughout the program.
Ice Hockey UK chairman, Jim Anderson, said: “We had coaches and administrators with us from the nine clubs that applied for this IIHF/IHUK LTP initiative.
“The clubs have approximately £80,000 worth of equipment distributed between them from the IIHF suppliers’ pool.
“In Dumfries last week, coaches were instructed in the latest IIHF LTP method of delivering and instructing, whilst the administrators were shown what was required by the IIHF, regarding statistics and administration of the program through to audit procedures.
“Ryan Rathbone delivered the IIHF/LTP presentation, whilst IIHF LTP instructor Scott McMeeken delivered the practical side of the program to coaches.
“Over 50 youngsters from the under-10 age group were on the ice, with each child receiving a stick after the session.
“Katie Ferguson delivered the administration and audit part of the LTP program and a junior team’s manager equipment seminar was also delivered by Craig Cooke, who is an equipment manager for various GB teams.
“People have already commented on the success of the project. Ice Hockey UK would like to thank everyone for attending and Dumfries & Galloway Council for their assistance in this project.”
