Local schools put on a Right Royal Exhibition in Kirkcudbright Town Hall

Over the last three months schools in the region have been creating works of art to commemorate 60 years of the Queen’s reign. You are invited to view their achievements in a free exhibition from 2 to 4 June in Kirkcudbright Town Hall.
The project was started by the Lord Lieutenant of The Stewartry of Kirkcudbright to mark The Diamond Jubilee by to engaging young people in this important event.
All schools in the Stewartry were invited to take part and were asked to:
“Research and engage in a reflection on the 60 years reign of the Monarch and express their hopes and aspirations for the future of a Modern Monarchy in today’s fast moving and changing society.”
“The works should depict key moments from Her Majesty’s reign, linking through to any perceived change in the influence of the future and the Modern Monarchy in today’s world.
The project, in whatever guise, must be meaningful, sympathetic, thoughtful but thought provoking.”
Eleven schools have taken part in the project including Dalbeattie High School, and the primary schools Dalbeattie, Colvend, Kirkgunzeon, Auchencairn, Kirkcudbright, Gatehouse, Palnackie, Dalry, Kells, and Castle Douglas.
The works presented are stunning, innovative and varied. One collage named “Dear Auntie” shows postcards written by the children who imagined themselves attending 60 major events in the Queen’s life; another work is a group of painted canvases which combine to form a jubilee image. There are portraits of the Royal Family, country views and times lines. The exhibition is certainly well worth a visit.
The exhibition is open, free of charge, 11-4 Saturday 2nd, Sunday 3rd and Monday 4th June in the Lesser Hall, ground floor, Kirkcudbright Town Hall.
