Meteor seen breaking up over Dumfries

A bright light, which moved slowly across the sky was seen over Dumfries just before 11pm tonight (Friday 21st Sept). Reports speak of the bright bluish white light developing ‘sparks’ trailing behind it and then what appeared to be firework like erruptions shooting off the core, and finally breaking into many yellow/orange coloured fragments dispersing across the sky.
Alive presenter, Mark Smith, was traveling on the Collin bypass when he and his wife spotted the bright light, in front of them. They saw the event unfold, over a period of about two minutes to the west of where they were. “It was quite surreal – at first we thought it was a firework, but it was moving too slowly. Then we thought it was a Chinese lantern, but they don’t break into a thousand sparkling fragments. When we got home, I called the Police, who referred me to Prestwick Air Traffic Control, who told me it was a meteor entering Earth’s atmosphere, which had been seen by aircraft pilots. It’s something we’ll never forget.”
People across the region have been commenting on having witnessed the meteor, with sightings as far south as Preston, Lancs.
