MSP ENCOURAGES LOCAL PEOPLE TO GET INVOLVED IN ORGAN DONATION BILL CONSULTATION

Dumfriesshire MSP Elaine Murray is encouraging local people to get involved in a consultation on the future of organisation donation in Scotland.
Elaine’s colleague in the Scottish Parliament, Anne McTaggart MSP, has recently published a consultation paper on her proposed Organ and Tissue Donation (Scotland) Bill, which would see a change from an opt-in system where people have to sign up to donate their organs to an opt-out system where people would have specifically state they do not want to donate their organs.
Elaine Murray said:
“Organ donation saves lives, but the system of registering could be more effective. Currently people have to opt-in to donate their organs after death, and the latest figures show that only 36% of people in our region have signed up as an organ donor. The figures for Scotland as a whole are slightly better at 41%. Research shows that by changing the law, organ donation rates increases by 25%-30%, and Anne’s proposals could make a significant difference.”
