Olympic flame torchbearers attend civic reception

The Olympics opening ceremony on Friday was also the moment for Dumfries and Galloway to recognise the Olympic Torchbearers who carried the flame through our region. The Torchbearers attended a civic reception at DG One Leisure Centre on the evening of 27 July 2012.
Dumfries and Galloway was one of only a few places in the UK to have the Olympic Flame on two separate dates and becoming both the first and last place in Scotland to entertain the Flame. Over 17,000 people across the region lined the streets to witness the flame carried by inspirational people from our region.
The Olympic Flame Torchbearers were selected to represent the region due to their contribution to our local communities from Dance School Instructors and Carers through to Charity supporters and organisers. Dumfries and Galloway Council recognised both the individuals’ on-going contributions to life in Dumfries and Galloway as well making the Olympic Torch Relay a success in our towns.
Brian Collins, Depute Leader of Dumfries and Galloway Council presented a gift to each Torchbearer and said, “London 2012 has been tagged with the strap line of ‘Inspire a Generation’ and that is exactly what these people have done and will continue to do. I hope many people will be inspired to become more active and involved in our communities as a result of these Games.”
