Police warn festival attendees of the dangers of toxic substances

Written by on June 13, 2012

On the eve of the Eden Festival, Dumfries and Galloway Police are warning festival attendees about the potential dangers of substance abuse.

The warning comes as a result of a number of drug related deaths in England which occurred over the last few weeks which have been directly associated with pink coloured ‘ecstasy’ type tablets. The pills are similar in shape and size to an ecstasy tablet but are often pink instead of white and usually have the letter ‘M’ on them, although the logo may vary.

Also with the recent death at the Rockness festival, Inverness where a young male died after he allegedly had taken a new psychoactive substance.

Detective Constable Scott Jardine, substance misuse coordinator for Dumfries and Galloway Police said: “We have no information that these substances are being distributed in our area, but drug dealers don’t recognise area boundaries.

“We encourage festival attendees to be responsible and aware of the dangers of the substances that they consume. New psychoactive substances are also named as legal highs, they are sold as bath salts, plant food etc and just because they are legal does not mean they are harmless, on occasions these substances can be as strong if not stronger than the substance they are trying in imitate.

“Remember there’s no way of knowing what you are getting when you take any substance. Be aware of the dangers and understand the potentially devastating effect drugs can have on your health.

“If you are experiencing side effects after taking drugs and are worried, contact your local Accident and Emergency Department, your Doctor or NHS 24 on 08454 242424.
