Queens beat St.Mirren in league cup

Queen of the South beat league cup holders St. Mirren at Palmearston tonight. After 90 min with mostly a midfield battle and few real chances. Queens shots came from long range and rarely made it difficult for David Cornell in the St.Mirren goal, while St.Mirrens only real chance hit the post on the stroke of half time. As game went into extra time most of the 2073 spectators must have thought this was heading for the lottery of a penalty shoot out. However half way into first half of extra time St.Mirren got a penalty after Michael Paton lost ball at edge of box and fouled opposition as he tried to retrieve ball. Keeper Calum Antell made a great save to keep score level, however Steven Thompson made it 1-0 just 2 minutes later as he headed in after a good cross. Queens did not give up though and kept going and you could sense a goal coming. Stephen McKenna got that goal with a brilliant strike from 20 yards. And then with 5 minutes to go Michael Paton curled a shot round a defender to beat the Keeper to make it 2-1 Queens. Another great cup night a Palmerston and now we play Alloa on Saturday before the visit of Rangers who beat Berwick Rangers 2-0 in Ramsdens cup tonight.
