Queens win play-off 1st leg

1996 spectators watched Queens beat Falkirk 2-1 at Palmerston park tonight. Falkirk was the best team early on and took the lead after only 8 minutes when Blair Alston took the ball unopposed into the box and fired the ball past Zander Clark’s far corner. Falkirk continued to press and went close on a couple of occasions. They came closest when David McCracken headed free header wide. Queens got better as the half went on and McHugh hit a shot straight at keeper McGovern just before half time.
Falkirk came out after half time looking for an early goal to kill the game off, however Queens defended well. 10 minutes into the half Burns was fouled, Chris Mitchell swung in a deep free kick, Durnan headed ball back across the goal and McHugh was on hand to squeeze the ball home. Queens had their opponents on the back foot after the goal without being able to make it count. The match evened out after this with both teams struggling to create any clear cut chances. Carmichael came on for Queens with 8 minutes remaining, and it was his pace that gave Queens the second goal. He ran onto a long ball over the top, managed to beat a defender to the ball, passed the ball to McHugh who let ball run across to his left foot and with 2 defenders closing in on edge of box he hit a brilliant shot into the top corner.
It was a good game for Queens who now go to Falkirk defending a 2-1 lead. Will make it a good day out for Queens fans heading up the road to support their team.
