Runners and riders enjoy Annandale and Eskdale Sports Academy

Written by on July 25, 2011

Runners and riders have been taking part in a range of Sports Academy sessions across Annandale & Eskdale as part of Dumfries & Galloway Council’s Annandale & Eskdale Sports Academy.

In Annan last week nearly 50 children joined in the four day Startrack Athletics coaching scheme at the recently re-laid running track. Supported by Annan & District Athletics Club, children were put through their paces in a range of run, jump and throwing events. The session incorporated coaching for people with disabilities and the children were lucky enough to be joined by Scottish athletes, 100 metre sprinter Hope Robertson and Kirsty Yates who does the shot put.

Young riders were also offered a day to remember with a visit to Murthwaite Green Trekking Centre in Silecroft, southern Cumbria. After receiving over 80 bookings for 30 places this popular activity did not fail to deliver with children learning to groom and tak, a lesson in the arena, horse management and study and pony games. The highlight was a beach ride of up to 5 miles depending on ability. Some took part in a gentle stroll along the sand whilst others went on an exhilarating gallop through the surf.

With a second trip organised to meet demand, a third will be organised should another 10 interested children come forward.

These two activities are just a small part of the Summer Sports Academy Programme which is funded by EnergySolutions, Awards for All, the Annandale & Eskdale Area Committee and Andrew Stevenson Foundation.
