Scottish Pupils to Celebrate Food and Healthy Eating

Written by on March 8, 2013

Education Ministers will join with school pupils in Scotland, the rest of the UK, and the USA on Friday March 8 to mark the first ever international school meals day and pay credit to those working in our schools to provide healthy and nutritious meals.

The event has been organised to raise awareness of good nutrition among children and foster healthy eating habits at home and at school and Scottish Ministers are showing their support.

Speaking ahead of the visits Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning Michael Russell said, “It is encouraging to see that take up of schools meals in Scotland has been rising since 2008 and continues to do so. The quality of our school meals is high overall, and our whole school approach is internationally recognised.”

“The Rural Secretary, Minister for Local Government and I met with local authorities and parents representatives yesterday to discuss how we will work to further improve the standards and quality of school meals in future. We will do this through a refresh of our Hungry for Success initiative and the Scottish Government is keen to encourage fresher and locally sourced produce in school meals.”
