On Sunday 4 March ten curlers in Dumfries Ice Bowl broke the world record for the longest continuous curling game. They smashed the current record of 57 hours and 44 seconds by posting a time of 61 hours, 39 minutes, 33 seconds.
The game lasted 245 ends, with Team 2 taking 220 shots to Team 1 taking 216.
Graham Sloan, Curling Development Officer and a member of the team, said, “Beating the current world record is a great result for the team. It also has helped to raise the profile of curling in the area.”
The team has had fantastic support from local business and individuals both financially and also by coming along in the middle of the night to encourage the team.
Local curlers also had the opportunity to be coached by Scotland’s top curling coaches to try to beat elite athletes.
Councillor Ivor Hyslop, chairman of the Policy and Resources Committee, said, “It is a fantastic achievement for our region’s curlers to receive world wide recognition. Congratulations must go to the players for the tremendous effort.”
The team is raising money to help develop curling at Dumfries Ice Bowl and around the region.
Funds will go towards developing the junior section and general curling facilities. It will also go towards upgrading the current stones to competition standard which would allow Dumfries Ice Bowl to start bidding for national and international events.
Two rinks squared off against one another with the fifth player rotating in when someone needed a rest.
The team will send their evidence to Guinness World Records for verification.
