DG One, remedial work to take place during school holidays

The DG One Leisure Centre, a Council owned facility that was designed and built in 2006/7 by Kier Northern.
The ‘wet side’ includes a main swimming pool, training pool and children’s pool, as well as a Jacuzzi. The ‘dry side’ includes a fitness suite, games hall and activity rooms. The building also contains staff offices, meeting rooms, a cafeteria and bar area.
Training Pool
There have been ongoing issues with the training pool since 2009, as previously reported.
In May 2012, a problem was identified with the training pool. This resulted in a temporary closure. Initially, this appeared to be restricted to a problem with the design and construction of the training pool’s moveable floor ram and pulley system. However, after further investigation by the Council’s expert technical advisers, it became clear that there were also further problems with the tiling of the training pool.
The Council and Kier have met and been in regular contact regarding DG One since this time.
On 3 October 2012, the Council requested Kier to carry out remedial works to the movable floor and pulley system, as well as proceeding with the tiling works required.
The tiling works will start on Tuesday 9 October 2012. The works to the moveable floor and pulley system will start on Friday 19 October 2012. The Council is awaiting confirmation of when all of the corrective works will be completed. However, it is expected that, without any further unforeseen difficulties, this should be achieved by Sunday 28 October 2012.
The Council has consistently pressed Kier to have the necessary remedial works carried out by Kier as quickly as possible in order that the training pool could be re-opened for customers as soon as possible.
Councillor Ivor Hyslop, chairman of the Policy and Resources Committee, said, “It is a priority for our Council to have DG One repaired as quickly as possible and that the contractor ensures that it is fit for purpose as a leisure centre. We have kept a record of all costs and losses incurred to date and will continue to do so. Councillors will receive a report outlining our options, enabling us to agree what action we will take.”
