Hostage Incident in Annan

Police Scotland report that about 1655 hours tonight, Saturday 10 August 2013 they were called to the Spar Shop in Butts Street in Annan, Dumfries and Galloway. On arrival it was found that two local female staff, aged 32 and 26 years were within the premises were allegedly being held hostage by a male person. The area was contained and cordoned off and further police resources directed to the scene. Trained police negotiators attended and began negotiating with a man within the premises. About 1915 hours the two female shop assistants left the shop premises are were taken for a medical check by police and ambulance staff. About 2030 a 26 year old man was negotiated safely out of the shop and was taken into police custody.
No person was injured in the incident and local householders and the community in the immediate vicinity were kept safe and informed by the officers attending the incident. The immediate area, including Butts Street, Millpark Terrace and Newington Road were sealed off to ensure the safety of the public, and to allow the police operation to be unhindered during this time.
