Nithsdale Community Achievement Awards 2014 launch

Nominations for the Nithsdale Community Achievement Awards 2014 are now open.

These awards recognise and celebrate voluntary commitment; achievements and learning for a great many community groups and individuals from across Nithsdale.

Councillor Ted Thompson, Provost and Chair of Nithsdale Area Committee, said, “Learners, volunteers and community groups are the unsung heroes of our communities. They add greatly to the social economic and learning development of our society often working with the most disadvantaged groups and frequently achieving spectacular results. This event is about recognising this and I hope that it will be enjoyable and rewarding for all the celebrants.”

Dumfries and Galloway Council and our partners are keenly aware of the vital role that learners, volunteers and community innovation plays in the life of our communities both rural and urban. In recognition of individuals, community groups and organisations across Nithsdale these awards have been established to showcase and to celebrate the outstanding contribution, enthusiasm and effort that the people of Nithsdale make to the rich and diverse culture of Dumfries and Galloway

There are 13 award categories in all, with each award having three finalists

The Award categories for 2014 are:

1. Adult Learner of the Year
2. Young Person of the Year
3. School and Learning community Award
4. Adult Volunteer of the Year
5. Young Volunteer of the Year
6. Community Group of the Year
7. Local Partnership Award
8. Youth or community project/programme of the year
9. Health Award
10. Cultural Diversity Award
11. Innovative Practice Award
12. Long-term commitment
13. Community Event of the Year

There are also two special recognition awards for ‘Community Resilience in Nithsdale’ and ‘Nithsdale Active Citizenship Award’ together with the annual – Judges Selection ‘Outstanding Achievement Award’ the recipient being drawn from the full list of category nominations received.

The awards evening will take place on Saturday, 1st March 2014 at DG One, Dumfries. This event promises to be a evening of entertainment and excellence, recognising and celebrating those achievements and efforts of so many volunteers, community groups and organisations who give their time to make Nithsdale the place to ‘live, learn, work and grow’.

The closing date for your nominations is: 5pm Thursday 30th January 2014. Nomination forms can be collected from Customer Service Centres and Public Libraries across Nithsdale as well as requesting directly by contacting:
