POLICE NAME VICTIMS OF A74M CRASH AT KIRKPATRICK FLEMING

POLICE have named the victims of the motorway crash which left two young men dead near Kirkpatrick Fleming yesterday morning.
The men who died were Tosief Ahmed, 21, and 22-year-old Asad Majeed, 22, both from the Oldham area in Lancashire.
A Police Scotland spokesman said today that they were still appealing for anyone with information to contact them.
Police said that relatives had been informed of the tragedy which happened around 6am on Sunday morning when their Mercedes sports car crashed into a bridge pillar killing both of them almost instantly.
Passing motorists alerted the emergency services just after 6am and they rushed to junction 20 on the A74M Glasgow – Carlisle motorway at Kirkpatrick Fleming.
Firefighters, police and ambulance personnel rushed to the scene but the two men were pronounced dead.
They had been travelling south on the motorway on their back home when the accident happened. Police have not yet released their names but are trying to contact family and friends.
The accident happened on the southbound carriageway close to junction 21 at Kirkpatrick Fleming closing the motorway until after noon on Sunday.
Both men were pronounced dead at the scene by ambulance staff.
Local diversions were in place and the road was reopened by police at around 1230 hours.
Police Sergeant Leigh McCulloch from the Dumfries and Galloway Trunk Road Policing Unit, said: “This was a serious road traffic incident which has resulted in the death of two men.
“Specialist officers continue to progress the enquiry to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and I would ask that anyone who may have witnessed the crash contact the Road Policing Unit at Lockerbie via the 101 number with any information they may have.”
No other vehicle is believed to have been involved in the crash which resulted in the car being crumpled almost beyond recognition by the impact.
One of the emergency services said: “It was a real horror crash scene. It was one of the worst I’ve had to attend.”
