The Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion the Royal Regiment of Scotland will be presented with the region’s pipe banner by Dumfries and Galloway Council at an Armed Forces Day flag raising in Annan on Monday 20 June 2011.
Armed Forces Day provides an annual opportunity for people to show their recognition, appreciation and support for service personnel, particularly those currently serving. Communities are encouraged to fly the Union Flag and Saltire in the week running up to Armed Forces Day (Saturday 25 June 2011).
The pipe banner, which features the regimental badge and the region’s coat of arms, is being presented to recognise the long standing relationship between the regiment and the region.
Councillor Patsy Gilroy, Convener of Dumfries and Galloway Council, said, “This is our regiment. Many local men and women serve in the Royal Regiment of Scotland, carrying out difficult and often dangerous tasks on our behalf and we are very grateful for the work that they do. The presentation of our pipe banner is our way of saying ‘thank you’. I’m sure that it will be carried with pride.”
Lieutenant Colonel Ben Wrench, Commanding Officer of The Royal Scots Borderers, said, “I’m delighted to be able to receive Dumfries and Galloway’s pipe banner on behalf of the regiment. Our regimental connections to our home area are very important to us. For example, I have a strong personal connection to this region as my grandparents lived in Lockerbie. The support we receive from our home communities is very uplifting, especially when we are committed to operations overseas or, as at present, when we are preparing to be deployed on operations.“
