Banks and Bankers – a contemporary story foretold?

Social historian Frances Wilkins will be leading a gentle walk around Dumfries on Saturday afternoon to discover the story of banks and bankers of 18th and 19th century Dumfries.
Starting from Dumfries Museum at 2.00pm on Saturday 22nd October participants will discover the locations and stories behind the eight main banks of this busy and thriving market town, discovering that history frequently repeats itself.
And at 7.30pm on Friday 28th October Frances will use Dumfries Museum’s collection of local bank notes as a basis for a talk on the early banking history of this area. Find out about Robert Herries of Halldykes, the father of the traveller’s cheque and James Ewart, accountant of the Royal Bank of Scotland, and his passion for the State lottery.
