Retained Firefighter Cost Rises by £27,000

An estimated compensation bill for part-time firefighters in Dumfries and Galloway has risen to £225,000.
The awards are being made to retained staff following a legal ruling on their salary conditions.
It follows a court challenge by the Fire Brigades Union that part-time staff were receiving less favourable terms than their full-time colleagues.
Dumfries and Galloway’s Fire and Rescue Service had set aside £198,000 but now needs an extra £27,000.
According to a report prepared by the service, 250 part-time staff in the region have already received settlements with a further 68 still waiting for their payments.
