DeafVision – new Befriending service across Dumfries & Galloway

DeafVision are starting a new Befriending service across Dumfries & Galloway, thanks to financial support from the Dumfries & Galloway Leader Programme. The Befriending service supports Deaf people who are socially isolated or who’d like the opportunity of being visited by a supportive volunteer.
The service is free and confidential. Volunteers visit clients on a mutually agreed basis, usually weekly or fortnightly, offering a variety of support which is dependent on the persons’ needs. Activities may include chatting, reading, walking, shopping or trips out. The Volunteers role is to empower the person there visiting, aid communication and reduce isolation. This helps build friendships and helps with developing self-esteem and confidence.
Volunteering for DeafVision is a two way process; it brings great joy to the people who receive the service and also enjoyment to those who offer their time by volunteering. Volunteers receive a range of free training, ongoing support and supervision, and all out of pocket expenses are reimbursed. DeafVision are always looking for more volunteers to join the scheme and offer a few hours to support a Deaf person. If you would like to get involved in the Befriending scheme, either as a volunteer or to be Befriended, please contact DeafVision on 01387 269161, or email Claire2@deafvision.co.uk.
