Flood warning

Written by on July 19, 2011

A flood alert has been issued for Dumfries and Galloway.

Heavy and prolonged rain will persist on Tuesday in the eastern section of the region, resulting in an increased flood risk from initially surface water sources but also from fluvial sources later on into Tuesday and possibly into Wednesday.

Smaller watercourses will respond quickly to heavy and intense spells of rainfall, while larger rivers will respond more gradually as the rain persists. The flood risk from larger rivers increases the longer the rain continues to fall in the region, with an emphasis on watercourses in the eastern part of the region.

Urban areas are at an increased flood risk from surface water flooding due to the intense nature of the rain forecast to persist throughout Tuesday and into Wednesday. Drainage systems in urban areas, including the road network, may struggle to drain excess water during heavier, more intense periods of rain in the region.
