FOLK & BLUES CLUB SUPPORTS SONGWRITING COMPETITION

Written by on May 7, 2014

The Domestic Abuse song writing competition for young people has been boosted by a donation from the former Dumfries Baw-bee Folk ‘n’ Blues Club.

The former Baw-bee Folk ‘n’ Blues Club (BbFBC) has donated its closing balance of funds, amounting to £360.63,  to support the Dumfries and Galloway Domestic Abuse and Violence Against Women Partnership (DAVAWP) Young People’s Song Writing Competition 2014.

The aim of the competition is to raise awareness of domestic abuse and other forms of violence, which mainly affect women and children. The competition also provides opportunities for songwriters to gain more knowledge and understanding of the reasons why these forms of abuse occur and will inspire them and their peers to take action against these issues.

The cash donated by the BbFBC will give a boost to the cash prizes for the young musicians who make it to the final this year; with awards of £400 for 1st place, £200 for 2nd place, and £100 for 3rd place.

John Carson, former BbFBC chairperson, said, “The committee felt it was appropriate to support this song writing competition for young people as they did in the past when the club was running.  Encouraging young people in singing, song writing and performing, in addition to promoting equality, were encompassed in our former club’s ethos. The DAVAWP song writing competition for young people similarly addresses these important issues.”

Kerry Herriott, DAVAWP development officer, said:, “The song writing Ccmpetition has been a success since 2011 and we have had fantastic entries from young musicians from all over Dumfries and Galloway every year since then.  I’m sure that this will be the case this year too.  The idea is spreading with two other areas considering holding similar competitions for young people to raise awareness of all these serious issues not only among young people but also among the wider community.”
