Written by author on May 7, 2014
The Domestic Abuse and Violence Against Women Partnership (DAVAWP) has launched its 4th song writing competition for young people.
The aim of the song writing competition is to raise awareness of domestic abuse and other forms of gender based violence, which affect mainly women and children. They not only have devastating consequences for the abused people but also a huge cost for society in general.
The aim of the competition is to contribute to our work towards the elimination of violence against women in Dumfries and Galloway.
Young songwriters (up to 25 years old) in Dumfries and Galloway are invited to write a song about domestic abuse or any other form of gender based violence. All musical genres are welcome. The closing date for entries is 5pm (1700) on Friday 31 October 2014.
Prizes for the include:
1st Place: £400 cash + the opportunity to play winning song at Youth Beatz 2015 + a recording session at Oasis Youth Centre + an interview on Alive + winning entry played on Alive 107.3 until 31/12/14
2nd Place: £200 cash
3rd Place: £100 cash
To support the young songwriters in their creative process a webpage with gender based violence statistics and further information has been created on the DAVAWP website: www.dumgal.gov.uk/davawp/
Professor Hazel Borland, DAVAWP chair, said, “This is another great opportunity to get young people involved in reflecting on and working against gender based violence and related issues. Since we launched the first song writing competition in 2011, we’ve had fantastic entries that demonstrated the local musical talent and great understanding of the issues relating to domestic abuse and other forms of gender based violence. I’m looking forward to this year’s entries and to the December concert featuring the finalists.”
