Tubular Bells, the first album on the fledgling Virgin label, was released on Friday 25th May 1973
On Tuesday, 29th May 1973 John Peel played the first side of Tubular Bells on his BBC Radio Show Top Gear
“I’ve been presenting Top Gear for nearly six years now but I think that is certainly one of the most impressive LP’s that I’ve ever had the chance to play on the radio, really a remarkable record. From Mike Oldfield and one of the first releases on the new Virgin label. An incredible start from them certainly. It’s called Tubular Bells and that was part one……A remarkable record and we’ll try and play the second side of that for you in a week or so.”
On Thursday 7th November another fledgling record company, Viral Discs and Downloads released the latest recording of Tubular Bells.
It was performed in school classrooms by The Children of Ireland and recorded and produced by Tom Newman the legendary producer of Mike Oldfield’s original.
On Tuesday 12th November Hugh Taylor will play the latest release of Tubular Bells by The Children of Ireland – All of it – On FOLKnSTUFF.
