Joan McAlpine MSP to host Whitesands Summit

South of Scotland MSP Joan McAlpine has invited representatives from Dumfries and Galloway Council, SEPA and Gillespies LLP, the group behind the “Whitesands masterplan”, to meet to discuss the way forward for the town centre.
The meeting will focus on flooding issues and explore pragmatic ways to overcome what is seen by most as the main barrier to town centre regeneration.
Commenting the SNP MSP said:
“Flooding on the Whitesands has always been an issue hindering the regeneration of Dumfries town centre.
“I know from experience that SEPA’s 1:200 year flood rule has made it nearly impossible to convert units on Friar’s Vennel to bring them back into use. Empty properties do not make valid contributions to the economy, environment or, generally, the sociability of the town.”
She added:
“I am pleased that the recent Whitesands charrette has produced a masterplan for Dumfries and this is very welcome.
“However, there are still issues to discuss, such as the 1:200 year flood rule, as well as what can be done in the meantime to encourage regeneration without ignoring the risks that flooding presents.
“I am sure that everyone coming to the table has the best interests of the town at heart and hopeful that we can produce results.”
The meeting will take place on Friday the 16th of November.
