Marcus Scotney Runs for GB

Dumfries ultra runner Marcus Scotney has been selected to represent Great Britain in an exceptionally tough endurance running event in Gibraltar this weekend. On Sunday 7th November, Marcus will take on some of the world’s top ultra-endurance runners in the gruelling 100km World Championships.
The event has attracted around 270 competitors from some 28 countries, together with management and physio support. In fact, the numbers involved are such that instead of the usual “athletes village”, the organisers have had to accommodate the competitors and their support teams in a cruise ship!
Marcus has been training hard for the race, putting in up to 100 miles per week and running almost 1000 miles over the past 12 weeks or so. He hopes to record a really good time, and would be delighted to break the seven hour mark.
Marcus is a keen listener to Alive radio, although it is rumoured that GB athletics chiefs have banned him from competing for Mrs Doyle’s delicious cakes on the Pete Best show (Thursdays, 7am-9am). He thoroughly enjoyed the evening he spent as a guest on John Fisher’s Friday night show, and hopes to be involved in a presenting capacity in the not too distant future. Despite his liking for the station, it is unlikely that Marcus will be lugging his laptop round the course to enable him to tune in online. “We’re not even allowed to carry an i-pod”, he explained.
The enthusiasm and energy Marcus displays in his running is also evident in his approach to his ‘day job’ as Associate Pastor (Youth) at Dumfries Baptist Church, where his wholehearted approach inspires and energises not only the young people, but also the fellowship at large.
