NEW CCTV SET UP TO BE APPROVED BY COUNCILLORS

COUNCILLORS will be asked this week to spend around £560,000 updating and upgrading the CCTV equipment which is currently used in 11 towns across Dumfries and Galloway as well as the construction of a new centralised monitoring facility . According to a report going before the council on Tuesday, with the exception of Dumfries and Stranraer, the present CCTV’s are not monitored in real time by staff but are recorded locally with no remote access to the live or recorded images.
These systems are located in Langholm, Gretna, Lockerbie, Moffat, Annan, Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbright, Castle Douglas and Newton Stewart. Now the officials are recommending to the council’s policy committee that money from £929,000 held in reserve and retained by the council in relation to the former Dumfries and Galloway Police and Fire and Rescue Services should be used.
It would include the construction of a new centralised monitoring facility for the high-definition cameras which would be installed in the 11 towns and a Community Safety Fund would also be set up.
