October Sports academy

Dumfries and Galloway Council is turning its attention to the forthcoming 2014 Commonwealth Games as inspiration for the October school holiday Sports Academy.
The Sports Academy in Annandale and Eskdale will feature fifteen of the seventeen Commonwealth Games sports.
Sports on offer include badminton, athletics with London 2012 Paralympic sprinter Libby Clegg, boxing, fencing, gymnastics with Scotland’s only Gold Medal winner Steve Frew, handball and hockey with a possible Scottish player visit. Children can also try judo, netball with another Scottish junior player visit, rugby sevens with local Scottish player Nick De Luca lined up to visit, shooting, table tennis, tennis, taekwondo, trampolining and a Swim2Win all day swimming camp.
The highlights include a week long football camp on Annan Athletics new 3G football pitch, curling with World Junior Champions Hannah Fleming and Alice Spence, water polo with London 2012 Captain Fran Leighton and a chance for 30 young cyclists to ride the boards at the all new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow.
The Active Start programme will also give children under 5 the chance to take part in organised sports sessions. Councillor Denis Male is chair of Annandale and Eskdale Area Committee which provided funding for the Sports Academy. He said of the programme, “It is fantastic that we are able to offer our children such a comprehensive programme of sport at a time when sport has never been so powerful and in the public eye.”
John Grierson on behalf of sponsor EnergySolutions, said, “Engaging through sport with children at this early age will help develop a healthy and active future. EnergySolutions are delighted to support this initiative.”
Calum Graham, Sports Development Officer, said, “This programme displays our commitment to deliver a lasting legacy as a result of the London 2012 and now the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. It is designed to motivate and engage young people in sport. Hopefully we can build on the spectacle of London 2012 and help inspire a generation of children.”
The Sports Academy in Annandale and Eskdale has received funding from Annandale and Eskdale Area Committee, Energy Solutions, Awards for All and The Andrew Stevenson Foundation.
