Police in Dumfries and Galloway have begun a wildlife crime enquiry in relation to a suspected shooting of a golden eagle in the Leadhills/Wanlockhead area of the region.

On 6 October 2012 a walker came across an injured eagle which was in poor condition, on the hillside in the Leadhills/Wanlockhead area.  The bird, a male, has since been examined by a vet from Edinburgh Zoo and early indications are that the bird has been shot.  It is currently being cared for at the Alloa Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre where it is expected to make a full recovery.

A joint investigation involving police, the Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the local Raptor Study Group has started and Wildlife Crime Officer for Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary Constable Andrew Wheeler says “it is beyond belief why someone would want to harm such a rare and beautiful bird in this day and age.  This investigation will focus on bringing those responsible to justice for this abhorrent crime.  I would urge members of the public to come forward f they have any information which would help with this enquiry, either by contacting police direct through 0845 600 5701, or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
