Police are reminding members of the public to be aware of the dangers associated with bogus callers. The warning comes after a male claiming to be from Scottish Water approached a property near Lochans at around 15.30hrs on Wednesday 8 June. He asked the female occupant if he could take a sample of water. The female occupier followed the male as he allegedly took a sample from the house. She thereafter contacted Scottish Water who confirmed that they did not have staff in the area collecting water samples.

The male was travelling in a white Ford Transit van with blue lettering on the side. The male had no ID and was not wearing a Scottish Water uniform. He had a Scottish accent although not local. He was around five foot eight inches tall with short greying hair and was wearing jeans and a jacket

If you seen this man or vehicle or have any information on the incident please contact police on 0845 600 5701.

Police advice is to always be extremely wary when people come to your property claiming to be from utility services. Always ask to see their identification before letting anyone into your house. Even if they do provide identification, check it thoroughly to ensure it is real. Keep your door locked whilst you check. If you are still suspicious ring their head office, however do not use any number they provide you, use the number of their company that is found on the phone book. Genuine staff will not mind you making these security checks. If you have elderly relatives or neighbours ask them to contact you if they get any suspicious callers. If you receive any suspicious or bogus caller, take down as much detail about them as possible, such as name, accent, appearance description and company they claim to work for and contact police.
